Deciding to homeschool - It was my husband's decision

Blog Cruise time again.  I've had a hard time getting excited about participating this year, honestly, because the "cruise" part of this posts a week after we submit links.  So you can read what I have to say... and come back next Tuesday to see what other TOS Homeschool Crew members wrote...

The question:  Why did you decide to homeschool?

This is hard to answer.  The decision was made so long ago, and for totally different reasons than why we still homeschool.  But hey, I'll tell the story.

Sixteen or seventeen years ago, I first started hearing of homeschooling.  Mostly through shows on Christian radio.  Specifically Focus on the Family, and a local guy whose name I totally don't remember, who had a show from 4-6 p.m. on weekdays.  I only vaguely listened to the homeschool talk, as 1) I didn't think we'd ever have kids, and 2) public school was good enough for me, and I couldn't imagine anything else for my kids.

Then, one day, Dale heard a homeschooling discussion on the afternoon drive-time local show.  And he was totally sold on the idea, and he said we were homeschoolers.

I smiled and said, "Sure, honey."  Because 1) I didn't think we'd ever have kids, and 2) that's what I'm supposed to do, right?  I confess though, reason #1 took precedence.  The homeschooling thing sounded pretty nuts, but it was really easy to agree to it when it wasn't really a possibility.

A few years later, and I found myself a stay at home mom of two little guys.  And I started actually investigating homeschooling, and realized maybe I could do this.  And maybe I did like the idea.

And then we attended our first homeschool fair... and discovered Sonlight... and the rest, as they say, is history...

So a radio show convinced Dale.  A Sonlight booth at a local homeschooling fair convinced me.

How about you?  What made YOU decide on your schooling choice?

Debra, when we were pregnant with our daughter, I was only 16 and my husband was 18.

Needless to say I was still in school when I got pregnant. For us, having been in school, we knew what it was really like, and what can happen.

I asked my husband one day while I was pregnant, what we were gonna do because I didn't want to send my precious baby to school. I knew what it was really like. We hadn't been out of school for many years before getting pregnant, and then forgetting how bad it really was.

Anyhow, I asked him about it. i said I didn't want to send my baby to school. HE said why don't we homeschool?

I have never heard of anyone homeschooling before. The only people I knew of who did school at home were those who had been kicked out of school and were homebound.

I didn't know you could CHOOSE homeschooling.

So from the time we were pregnant we knew we were gonna homeschool.

But it was my husbands idea too!
